The frustrating thing is that I have and it was easier than this; it's those were just beginner's luck. This one, I hand-basted in and it was fine, but when I used the sewing machine, the stitches on one side were too close to the teeth and it wouldn't open. I pulled out those stitches and re-did the seam, but now it's too far away and didn't catch on that side. I might have to just hand-sew that side of the zipper.
At least it's a side zipper so the messiness shouldn't be too obvious when I'm wearing the dress.
PS - are you owlfish's sister? You mentioned a post or so back that you had a sister who'd recently given birth to a girl; plus it was owlfish who introduced us in the first place. Just wondering.
Do you have a zipper foot, or just a normal one? I find a zipper foot does help, although it's not fool-proof, and I'm developing a preference for invisible zippers, because with a proper invisible zipper foot, it's really easy to put them in neatly, as the foot pulls up the teeth and guides the needle to stitch in exactly the right place, as long as you've basted it in neatly! Anyway, I feel your pain; I have put my current dress on one side until I can take the time to take it apart, make some fairly major alterations, and try again!
I'm not related to Owlfish, no; my sister is pregnant (she's just found out it's a girl, she's not due until September). Owlfish and I met through mutual friends, and then discovered that we have several sets of intersecting friends from completely different places. Small World Syndrome!
OK, zipper is sewn in (partly by hand) and skirt is hemmed. The sleeve ties are kind of meh (http://www.flickr.com/photos/22411134@N08/7311368456/in/photostream/), but I'll keep tinkering with them. Fun thing is that as soon as I went over to Gertie's New blog for Better Sewing, she was posing in a floral wiggle dress *she'd* just made (http://www.blogforbettersewing.com/2012/05/pink-floral-wiggle-dress.html). She includes a mini-tutorial for the drape on one side, too.
