Dear Google – normally I like your services, I really do; but I’m less than sanguine about your self-driving car idea – not for the usual “omgcrash!” reasons, but because – well, if there are enough people who don’t like driving themselves to make this worthwhile, shouldn’t we be improving public transit instead of pursuing a solution that will keep the same number of vehicles on the road as at present? I mean, your selling point is apparently “have your hands free on your morning commute to eat your breakfast, put on makeup, read etc.” I already have that. I take a bus. I can knit on my commute.

I know, I just love these visions of the future where everybody in a subdivision gets in their self-driving car at the same time every morning and drives down the same highway to the same downtown. Oh well, at least they didn't put in an LRT at 5% of the cost because that would be (leaving aside the question of who put the highway in) people doing things in a group and that's Communism!

I wish we had a Hackers Division like the Amish do to evaluate new technologies to see if they make sense for their lifestyle or even if they make sense period. I guess it's too much to ask to keep up with the Amish though.

Could we at least keep up with the Mennonites (New Order)? Karl Schroeder might be able to help.
