It probably also helps to go to a club with an older crowd....

Just came from seeing Big Rude Jake and Quicksand at Hugh's Room - great concert, but I knew it would be - what really impressed me was the venue - apparently you *do* get what you pay for with club cover charges: Good sightlines! Good acoustics! An audience who is actually there to listen rather than talk amongst themselves, forcing the band to crank the amps to painful levels! The band starting at 8:30 sharp and playing for two hours, rather than the opening act coming on around 10 pm and the headliners not appearing till midnight!

Yes, Hugh's Room is Fabulous! I saw the Poetry Slam semi-finals, the Arrogant Worms and some Bluegrass Master who's name I forget (with Special Guest Star The Bluegrass Kid!) and every time it was just perfect. If you order the Meal Deal the meal is great as well - although it makes for kind of a long evening sitting down through appetisers, main course, desert and two sets. I don't know about the correlation with age as some of the Poetry Slam crowd was pretty young but Hugh's whole reason for the starting the place was to cater to serious sound fans and he's certainly done that.

Yeah, Jake apparently has a long history with the place and talked about it a bit between numbers.

I went to one concert there, but remember the venue fondly, yes!
