green_trilobite is now re-watching the 2004 Astroboy tv series. Two things I've noticed so far:

1. The animation is gorgeous.

2. For a high-tech society, they sure don't take any trouble to do background checks - many of the plots turn on villains just showing up and asserting something, or claiming to be from a science foundation that doesn't exist.

Too trusting!

That's nothing! I just finished watching the classic "Gundam 083 - Stardust Memories" Anime Mecha series. In that, Gato just walks into the hangar, jumps into the cockpit of a giant robot with nuclear weapons and takes off. He doesn't even need to hot-wire it or steal the ignition key!! The only sneaky thing he does is put on a soldier's uniform from the side which owns the robot. Plus, the nuke doesn't require an activation code or anything: he just points it, fires and it goes off.

It's possible there's only so much effort, funding etc, available for technological development, and that the universes that develop old-school space-opera tech and fully autonomous robots don't get databases or the internet.
