Well, I was thinking that the movie is as much Gothic as it is noir, and then I remembered Victorian sensational fiction, which is like the transitional genre between Gothic and detective fiction, or the mash-up of Romanticism and Realism.

(Also, the example of the genre that leaps to my mind is The Woman In White, which involves doppelgängers and identity and a smart brunette investigating the death of her blonde half-sister— I’m amazed nobody’s rewritten up a Twin Peaks Victorian AU.)
