He was doing a very good off-kilter performance that for plot reasons had to be slightly more subtle than some of the other off-kilter performances. I’d already been spoiled for the plot, but if I hadn’t, I think he and the script would have successfully taken me from noticing “this FBI agent is quirky” to “this person has never been inside a house before and also hadn’t seen their current face in a mirror up until now.”
