Annihilation (2018)
Stray thoughts (spoilery)—
The image of Kane and Lena’s interlaced fingers refracted through the water glass not only sets up the prism concept for later, but kind of looks like chromosomes going through telophase. Also, way to pick evocative personal names.
I think I spotted some fasciated daisies part-way into the Shimmer, at the point where things are just starting to get visibly mutated.
This is a movie in which a non-chronological narrative structure arguably has an in-story explanation, if we headcanon that the Shimmer is refracting time, or at least memory, as well as physical matter. But also, the Shimmer acts like a lot of comic-book mutagens, in that the affected subject’s personality and desires appear to have some bearing on the course the mutation will take.
