had American Gods been written and filmed some sixty or seventy years earlier, Spencer Tracy would have made an excellent Wednesday.

Sold. (Alas that Max von Sydow would then have been too young to play actual Odin, from the very end of the novel.)

I wonder if Harry Belafonte might have worked.

Just based on The World, the Flesh, and the Devil (1959), I think Belafonte would have knocked it out of the park, but Poitier had a noir mode in addition to his more familiar, dignified persona and might have done just fine.

No idea who else to cast for this premake.
