It's Canadian. Some of them have topical or made-up-by-the-bored-survey-team names, though, like "Aneroid" (surveyors had lost their barometer.) also, wiki claims that Ogema, SK, where my grandfather was born, was originally going to be called Omega, because it was at the end of a railway line; but it turned out there was already another town using the name, so somebody picked a Cree word that had the virtue of being an anagram of "omega."

I'm leaning towards a classical or Biblical name that ties in with later events in the story without being too obvious.
