Seriously, why had I never heard of the Martin brothers until this evening? John was a painter and engineer who hung out with all the intellectuals of the time, including Prince Albert; William was a mad Tory inventor with a hate-on for Newtonian physics; Jonathan was an even madder Methodist preacher who eventually set fire to York Minster because he heard sinister noises coming from the organ.
