Synaesthesia didn’t even occur to me, although that would fit with the scene in which he implied his colour perception also included an element of sound.

Incidentally in real life it’s apparently the colour-blind who are hardest to fool with (military) camouflage – I think because they tend to compensate by focussing on texture.
