Costuming

Everybody wants to fly.

This weekend I finally started in on the jet-wings costume I've been planning for SFCOntario 3 (also Hallowe'en, even though these days that's usually just hanging out in our building's lobby long enough to take a few pictures).

The extendable wings are pretty much done and harnessed -- now I just need to figure out how to attach the jets (painted juice-bottles).

One can do a lot with gold paint thinly brushed over a coat of black.

I think I might also get some off-white fabric and attach little sails between the "metal" pinions. My aviatrix outfit is good to go, except I think, having tried it one, that full-length khakis would look better than shorts over tights. Pix later. Meanwhile, drinking coffee with a shot of Kraken spiced rum. Yum ("nom" is reserved for solids).

ETA - while taking out the recycling, I found a value-size laundry-detergent bottle with two nozzles. This is perfect for a jet-pack - either incorporated into the costume, or for someone's kid.

Weekend Report, pt. II

Probably because of all the hall costumes in evidence yesterday, green_trilobite has expressed interest in putting together a steampunk costume. He's been toying with the idea for a while, actually -- he bought a pith helmet last year. Today he picked up some Russian paratrooper goggles from the flea market; and I've begun an attempt at drafting him a waistcoat. So far I've downloaded this one, stretched the proportions in Photoshop, left out the darts, and printed it; the muslin I made indicates that I need to extend the front panels a bit, so I've built out the edge of the pattern with some more paper. Now I need to find some more expendable fabric to try it out with.

(no subject)

Went to Steam on Queen, a one-day event at Campbell House hosted by the Toronto Steampunk Society. Didn't take any photos of my own outfit; but a couple of people asked to, so I may be able to find links later.

ETA - when we arrived, three women were bellydancing to Fighting Trousers. I was trying to figure out why the recurring sting sounded so familiar; finally I recognized Raymond Scott under it all.

Further ETA: Now I come to think of it, 'Fighting Trousers' came on the PA after the dancing.

Goths! And Steampunks!

The Guardian's photo essay on Goth Weekend in Whitby. i like the somewhat deadpan captions: "A goth enjoys the sea breeze in his hair," etc.

Neverwas Haul

It's like someone took a slice of Deadwood and put it on wheels. Wish I could find more pics of the interior.

Actually, it also kind of reminds me of a sketch green_trilobite and his friend Jason Taniguchi wrote years ago, in which a writer tries to pitch his idea for a tv Western, which begins to sound oddly familiar:

RODDENBERRY: And the wagons, they're so high that the settlers need to use these long wooden beams to get down. They just climb on the beams and slide: Beeeeam down!

EXEC: Then how do they get back up?

RODDENBERRY: They just BEEEAM up! and there's this Black lady with a really loud voice! She's so loud she can shout messages to other wagons, and even other wagon trains! And so, her nickname is "Uheardme."

EXEC: "Uheardme?" (sighs.)
