1. Someone had rented a vacation home that was “part of the neighbouring estate, and open to the sea.” It was a cave, full of jumbled neo-classical statuary and urns in white marble, an encrustation of salt crystals creeping over everything. Already many objects were half-embedded in the walls. I thought it was beautiful, but might be awfully damp for sleeping in.

2. I had gone into a Shopper’s Drug Mart and noticed that they had a section full of vintage, mostly 1950s dresses. I went to look and found a grey flannel dress with an interesting construction that I wanted to try on. Downstairs were fitting rooms, all occupied. While waiting, I noticed a sign that said “Members Only” and worried I might get in trouble for being there, but decided ‘Members” probably just meant “people with a store points card” which I had. Eventually I got into a room, which turned out to be an entire bedroom, with a man who looked a bit like Adrian Brody in the bed. He told me that this was a “literary brothel” – no sex, but he would recite poetry to me if I wished. He seemed to want to, so I shrugged and let him go ahead while I tried on the dress. I told him I could not recite any poems to him, as I was married and it might count as infidelity. Later I left the drugstore, only to remember I hadn’t paid for the dress. It turned out to be $180, and had by this time changed from grey flannel into some sort of yellowish tweed, so I hesitated to pay that much, but eventually I decided it would still be good to have for the office. I stepped out onto a patio, where I saw a group of people (including Andrew, and also some friends of mine from twenty years back, one of whom had aged a great deal more than I would have expected). The Adrian Brody guy had changed into an ornate costume and was doing a soft-shoe dance with another man. They seemed to be part of a travelling band of performers, who had a stage built out of bones and taxidermied animals – I was afraid Andrew would notice it and be upset (some of the animals were cats) so I was relieved when he asked if we could go home. However he insisted on taking the short route, which kept leading us off of cliffs and things.

I can’t recall if this scene happened before or after part two: but there was also a dream that took place around a college campus, and there was some deal with gluten-free pizza that was served by an old lady who hovered in front of, or was pinned to, some kind of demonic symbol.
