Dream Report

1. A spaceship was approaching Earth. An "expert" said it was obviously built by "white, male humans," and I tried (unsuccessfully -- the dream wouldn't let me hit hard) to headbutt-him for racism and sexism. I had to admit he may have had a point about humans, though, since the furniture I saw when exploring the ship seemed intended for human or closely-humanoid bodies. Then I realized that this was merely the portion of the ship intended for human use, and that the other sections were on their way to join up with it. Somewhere in this dream I was also editing together a version of Star Wars in which Lando was the central character.

2. I was staying in a hotel that was a sort of indoor Rudyard Kipling theme park. A lot of British-imperial stuff kept happening, but eventually it segued into an SF theme park -- when I looked out the "windows," there were artificial views of alien landscapes, actually elaborate scale models. The set-up was later rented out to different groups wishing to LARP or shoot fan films.

I woke up and reflected that my subconscious seemed to be trying to make the point that SF could serve as a "harmless" form of orientalism, i.e., you can have fun world-building interesting customs and exotic art, without actually treating any real cultures as Other. The downside is you have no need to actually engage with any real cultures outside of your own.

3. I was again in a hotel at some sort of convention. Near me, an attendee gave his friend a small vial of LSD. I felt disappointed that I was not offered any, as I'd never tried it and was curious. Later, somebody reminisced about a friend's apartment which he'd always visited while slightly stoned and expressed the belief that the place would probably seem unfamiliar if her ever went there sober. Even though he no longer did drugs, he would probably get stoned to visit, he said, as it was part of the ritual of visiting the guy, like ordering in food with a lot of ginger in it.

I woke up and reflected on the irony that during extremely vivid dreams I had been feeling sorry for myself that I'd never tried hallucinogens.

Mention of Love

"Love Song" is my favourite of Keri Maaren's songs -- I've seen her perform locally several times, and she deserves wider attention. This one is every love song by an alternative female songwriter you've ever heard on the radio.

Wasn't totally happy with how the dress looked, so I lowered the neckline in front and changed the side drape. I think this is a cleaner look.

(no subject)

Andrew is rewatching all of Ray Bradbury Theatre in preparation for an upcoming panel. I know Bradbury didn't much like communications technology, and I personally find phones nightmarish, but I find I sympathize with everyone else in 'The Murderer' who has to deal with the guy randomly smashing their radios, faxes and cel phones; and especially with his wife and kids who have to deal with him suddenly whipping out a gun in the house and shooting the tv set and all the appliances.
