Current Badness

"It's started," our accountant's wife said yesterday, as she came into his home office to tell him a man had set himself on fire outside the Ontario Legislature where farmers were protesting. As it turned out, he had nothing to do with the farmers and we still don't know why he did it, although the Star says he'd demanded to see the premier about his alleged torture by police.

Meanwhile, the little girl whose father threw her off an overpass before jumping to his death is still in hospital with serious injuries.

And efforts are being made to keep an activist from being deported before her appeal for citizenship can go through.

I don't think there's any connection between these events. Toronto's a big city, and many bad things happen here as well as good. I don't want to think it's started, whatever it is.

Meanwhile, we're trying to get Himself's mom out of hospital and back home, albeit with some sort of live-in care. We keep trying to argue with the staff, telling them that her memory problems, though real, are less likely to be a concern in a neighbourhood where she's lived for twenty years, and would be offset by the morale boost of being home in her own apartment. They keep saying, "oh, but we can't be 100% sure she'd be safe! what if? what if?"
I feel like going into full-on Oscar clip mode and shouting, "Nobody's 100% safe! She's 84, for heaven's sake, we should be looking at quality of life - you say she's safe here but she's dying inside!"

Also, my faith in their ability to supervise her isn't that high, since a) it took them a month of prodding from us to discover the problem with her hearing aids is that they're missing - probably left at the previous hospital; and b) the temporary hearing aid they got her has also vanished, lost somewhere in the paperwork.
